Matzah in the House: Passover Playdough

Note: Just in case you thought mom was really out to lunch, we know that playdough is not technically Kosher for Passover.  We generally like to look for fun ways to celebrate the larger meanings behind any and all holidays.

It's been awhile since we made a new batch of playdough and with Passover just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to try and make some that resembled matzah.  Plus I just cooked up some real matzah at school, so I was ready to show mom the ropes.  We made our usual cooked playdough, but skipped the coloring and scent steps -- we needed this to look like real dough.  And then we each got a huge hunk while it was still nice and warm.  We rolled it out with a real rolling pin and then got to making matzah.  Mom's original idea was to press bubble wrap onto it, but the only bubble wrap we had was inside of packing envelopes we had opened up and the bubbles weren't quite raised enough to get the effect we wanted.  So we tried all kinds of different circular tools.  I liked using the circular end of the rolling pin.  Cami liked using some of the playdough toys.  But she insisted that she was actually making "Joe Joe's" (Trader Joe's oreos) and not matzah.

In the end, we went back to the bubble wrap and pressed down hard on the dough while rolling across the top of the wrap.  Once we had a better impression, we ran a brown marker across the top of it to give it some color.  It really worked!  But you know once mom broke markers out and gave us free reign to color playdough, we could have cared less about the matzah.  Why didn't we ever think of that before?!  And we used scented markers, so the dough smelled all kinds of yummy.  More on what we did next later this week ....

matzah!

Oh my goodness, it's brilliant!! Thank you for sharing, I know we will be making this in the weeks leading up to Passover! (That's now! Is it time to panic yet?)

Thanks! If you make it, let us know how it turns out. It is time to panic - it seems like one holiday after another!
