Winter Coat Favorites for Boys

Happy New Year! We've been at the New Jersey shore for the past week and the temps have been FAB. But, Kane got a sled from Santa and is hoping for real winter weather sometime soon. So it's time to share my winter coat faves for boys. I ended up picking out a much darker set than I did for Cam's favorite coats. But Kane wears such bright clothes to begin with that I think they work!

Winter Coat Favorites for Girls

It's supposed to top, TOP, 25 degrees F here today! We are getting a blast of arctic air and I'm hauling out our winter gear. That also means that I'm dreaming of all of the other winter coats I had my eye on this season. I'm sharing my picks for the little ladies today—with this kind of weather, you might want to stock up ....

p.s. that rose gold number is on super sale right now. Sizes keep selling out, but they've been replenishing too. I picked one up for Cam for next year.

Fall Cardigan Must Haves

Right around now, when the weather actually starts to get cold, I start itching to get the kids new clothes. But since I already bought their fall clothes back before school started, they really don't need anything new. I do like adding an extra layer and changing up what they've got by adding in a few new cardigans though. For both of them. Cardigans are such a great way to add a fun print or color to an outfit and Kane in particular loves to feel like he's "dressing up" without wearing real fancy clothes to school that are sure to get ruined. Here are a few I'm eyeing for each of them ....

Kane's Favorite Fall Looks!

Kane had incredibly specific ideas of what he wanted his fall back-to-school wardrobe to look like. He told me: dress up clothes ("for a party, like a tuxedo"), skinny green pants, and striped shirts. He said no characters (which I generally wouldn't get him anyway -- house rule) unless it was a minimal graphic design. Needless to say, we had a few negotiations over shopping. But I think we arrived at several looks that work for both of us.

Much like Cam, I'd say that Kane has moved a little more in the alternative direction, but there's still plenty of prep there too. And he is wearing a lot darker colors these days, which might just be my attempt to co-opt them to wear a uniform of all black and grey like me. At least he has continued to resist the all Under Armour look, although I'm sure that's coming some day. Here's what he's working.

Everyday Stripes -- still his main look, Kane dons skinnies and a striped shirt pretty much every day. He's branched out a little to include a few graphics, but if stripes are available, that's what he's wearing. He also started collecting leather and wax coated bracelets this summer from everywhere we traveled. And then friends starting bringing them back for him from places too. He's got a whole armful.

Cameron's Favorite Fall Looks

Our kids normally love back to school shopping. But for some reason this year, they both resisted giving up the clothes they'd outgrown. Kane relented in less fabulous fashion, but Cameron through a full on tantrum about giving away last year's clothes. I finally let her hold on to a dress she'd worn to her 6th birthday party for "sentimental reasons." Once we got over that, they both got much more in the shopping mood. So, as always, I'm putting together their favorite fall looks to share.

Cam has held strong in the girly and glam department, but definitely added a little more edge this year. She loved all the boots and motorcycle jackets we spotted out and about on our trip to Scotland + Ireland so she'll be sporting plenty of edge with her prep and gold this year. I think she does a good job of balancing, but I do have to rein in her accessories some days!

Glam Cam -- still her number one look, the more gems, gold, and glitter she can work into one outfit, the better. Too much sparkle? No such thing. And I'm not complaining. She has started saying that somewhat cutesy clothes are "for babies" though, which kills me because she will always be my baby (which I prove by scooping her up and rocking her like one). She picked out a fab iridescent backpack from J.Crew this year (shown here), but it's out of stock so I linked to a similar one. Glam on, Cam. Glam on.

Rock with a Smidge of Hipster -- she'll never give up all her glam, but Cam was obsessed with getting a moto jacket for fall and keeps sporting fake hipster frames at home. She is finally into skinny jeans and loves wearing them with boots (gold boots, obvi).

Weekend Casual -- Cam is continuing with several sports this fall, but always tries to work her own clothes into the uniform requirement. We've been watching Project Runway together, which probably isn't helping. But I like that she tries to make things her own. When not in full on sports gear on the weekends, she likes to basically wear things that feel like pajamas but don't look like pajamas (really, who doesn't?). With lots of accessories (she is still learning the art of editing a la Tim Gunn).

Spring Break Essentials -- Carry-On for the Girls

We are now at T-weeks countdown around our house for spring break. And that means that the kids are daily trying to sneak the spring break clothes tucked away in their closest into their wardrobes. The only cure I've found to stop Cami from dashing out of the house in a winter coat and gladiator sandals is to have her help lay out the clothes she plans on packing and run through every wardrobe iteration. We try to pack light (well, I try to pack the kids' clothes light so I have room to stash my extra stuff in their bags), so we're aiming for a carry-on of clothes that will last a week.

Don't believe it? Check out the twenty-five outfits we've planned below. The first and last are planned travel outfits (the only way to travel with a fedora is to wear it. Trust me). The rest are options for everything in between ... with plenty of room to make up more. I think the key is to pick a solid set of basics, but that still have a little interest and detail. Mix in a group of interesting pieces based on just a few bright colors that work well together. And finish it off with a good set of swim, shoes, and accessory pieces. We just might be able to pull this off -- boys, stay tuned ....

Weekend Makes

I'm guessing you noticed from my post on Cameron's favorite fall looks, but my lady likes herself the color gold. Metallic will do, but gold is her fave. So when we found ourselves with the need to buy a pair of gym shoes for school (had to be athletic and had to be velcro), Cam requested gold. I looked high and low, but couldn't find a pair under $150. And even I have my limits (really, I do). And while I'm on board with Cam's fashionable intentions and support her expressing herself how she feels comfortable, at the end of the day, she needs to be able to do what she needs to be able to do at school. I also just can't believe she's old enough to be in kindergarten ... gah!!! Anyway, she finally agreed to a leopard pair with gold accents -- we'll see how they hold up, I have my suspicions. But, in the meantime, I've rounded up some golden weekend makes for my favorite gal. Stay gold, Ponyboy.

Kane's Favorite Fall Looks

Oh happy day!! Today is our kids' first day back at school. Technically Cameron is only going for two hours today, but I'll take it. Although, at the same time, I'm now feeling sad about summer being over and the kids being so big. They seem ginormous to me. Especially Kane. My first grader is up to my shoulders (not that I'm tall) and has seemingly lost all his little kidness. Speaking of which, he had strong thoughts on his fall wardrobe, which still features the color green wherever possible. Here's what he's got lined up.

Dressy Prep -- he's fallen off ties somewhat, but Kane still favors looking "dressy" and if he sees a green tie, he has to have it (especially if it has anything to do with LEGO or StarWars). He scored a sweet pair of bright green suede moccasins in Positano this summer and he's begging to wear them to school (his are much nicer than those shown below, but this was the closest I could find online). He also likes mixing patterns and includes stripes whenever he can.

Everyday Brights -- Kane has really taken to putting together his own outfits and needs a strong reason for changing whatever he's paired up. That reason does not include having too many bright things at one time. Well, at least it's hard to lose him in a crowd. He will only wear GAP jeans and still favors a good fall jacket (he actually asked specifically for a wool coat this year, but I can just imagine what would happen to that on the playground).

Weekend Sports -- he is signed up for four sports this fall. So far he remains somewhat unaware of the crowd dressing complete in UnderArmour (not that I can point any fingers, that's generally what I'm in) and goes for comfortable sportswear. He did persuade his dad to purchase a few typographic shirts and name-brand sportswear for him though .... For obvious reasons, he is also not hard to spot on the field.

Cameron's Favorite Fall Looks

Oh yea. It's that time of year again: back-to-school shopping. I don't know who is more excited -- the kids or me. And I'm mixed on our motivations. Either way, it's happening and we're all pumped. Cameron's favorite looks have changed slightly from last year (post here), but she holds strong in the girly and glam department. She has definitely bumped up her sporty interest as well, which is good because I think she's in for a bit of a shock when I tell her that ballet flats aren't going to really fly at her new school. Maybe we can at least sneak them in the first day!!

Glam Cam -- this is still Cameron's most favorite look. Worn anywhere at any time. She's even planning on donning a few of these for her first day of Kindergarten! And, yes, we know the bag isn't practical, but she's our Pineapple Princess!

Favorite Back-to-School Backpacks!

You know I love a good virtual shopping session and I have been chomping at the bit to get the kids back to school going on back-to-school shopping! For the first year ever, my loves are going to be re-using their same backpacks from last year (quality purchases pay sometimes!). But I always love starting school shopping by picking out a brand new pack. So, that's first up on this year's scouting list. Here are our favorites!

Kane's Favorite Fall Looks

I'm going to guess that it was super evident from my post on Cam's favorite fall looks that I've got a little shopper on my hands. But you might be surprised to hear that Kane's a decent shopping buddy as well. He's not quite as particular about what he wears as Cameron, but he definitely knows what he likes. And, much to his chagrin, one of his most long-standing unsuccessful negotiations has been his quest for a three-piece suit. He has tried every which way to get me to get him a suit, including trying to persuade a J.Crew saleswoman to give him a soon-to-be out of season suit on sale. I have a feeling it's somewhat more about getting his way than the actual suit, but he really does like to dress up. So here's what he's rockin' right now.

Everyday Brights -- Kane loves bright colors and stripes. So he basically has some variation of this on for school every day. Green is still his most favorite color, so he likes to work that in wherever he can (socks and shoes are a particularly fun spot to do that). And he has a similar jacket, which he will wear all day long (including inside or in 80 degree weather) in an attempt to prove to me he will wear a suit jacket if I buy it for him.

Cameron's Favorite Fall Looks

If you've ever followed me over at A Feteful Life, you'll be familiar with my love of "faux shopping." It's where I get to scour stores for my favorite fashion finds (for me or our kids), put everything together, and ... then never buy it. I do this a lot. Because in the middle of a particular season I get bored with the kids' clothes and start looking for next season. Which means by August, I've already purchased all of their fall clothes. So when it actually is fall (now), they don't need anything else, but I still like to look at all the new fall clothes and pretend I'm shopping. Plus a friend asked when I was finally going to post on the kids' clothes, so here you go, J.

Cameron is a girly girl, but with some edge. She likes preppy and polished and sparkly, but strong. And that girl loves dresses and flats. She actually packs gym shoes to take every day and changes when she needs at school. Too funny. We have definite store favorites and I'd say that these are her three fall looks in heavy rotation -- some she has, some she wants (and will be wanting until they go on sale), but all of it she'd wear. What's your little lady into these days!?

Glam Cam -- This is Cameron's most favorite look and it's not limited to special occasions. She wears this to school, to the playground, to 6:30 am IHOP breakfasts. It's her thing. So we have lots and lots of jeweled dresses, which I buy on sale at the end of a season for the next one.
