2017 Winter Bucket List: 50+ Ideas of Cold Weather Fun!

The frigid weather has finally arrived in D.C. and nudged me to post our annual Winter Bucket List. We actually put this together before the holidays, so we can already cross a few of them off. As usual, some of the items are highly unlikely (Iceland, sorry Kane), some of the items are recurring favorites, and some are holdovers from the Fall Bucket List that we just didn't get to. So don't let the cold weather get you down -- bundle up and get your family moving on your own list!

p.s. we knocked off just less than 1/2 of the items off of our Fall Bucket List. Not bad!

Fall Sensory Play

There are so many great scents and textures to the fall season, and what better way to explore them than with some sensory activities! Plus, they just might stop me from eating all. the. pie. Happy almost fall, all!

(Still) Winter in Rock Creek

Yes, technically we posted winter at our Rock Creek spot already. But that was when it still seemed like it should be cold and snowy. Not this Narnian Age of Winter business. I mean, at the risk of joining all the complaining folk, what the H!? We did decide to take advantage of the frozen tundra we now call home to snap some pics in Rock Creek that actually look more like proper winter. All the snow and ice actually prevented us from getting us to our usual spot, but we were just about .5 mile upstream. I had a really difficult time keeping these two a comfortable-for-me distance from the frozen choppy creek, but we all made it. Cam insisted on pretending she was a snow leopard, crawling around and eating snow. Kane decided snow leopards play fetch, so he threw sticks for her. A close range coordinated snow ball fight rounded things out. Perhaps we'll head out today to capture what our spot looks like post-ice storm.

Winter in Rock Creek Park

Grey, grey, grey. It's one of my absolute most favorite colors. But, man. I'm sick of grey winter already. The sun popped out for about an hour last week and warmed things up -- in fact, it melted all the snow that had fallen the previous day. So we didn't actually get any snow into our "winter" trip to our best spot in Rock Creek Park (see fall posts here and here). But you can still tell it's winter. The bare trees. The dark, cold water. It just looks quiet. Well, at least until we got there.
